BIW SWEEPS PAST 10,000TH USER LANDMARK

06 December 2001

BIW Technologies (BIW), the UK market leader in collaboration web services for the construction and property industry, has reached a milestone in the use of its BIW Information Channel service, passing the 10,000 users landmark.

The 10,000th user was Graham Stark, a senior project manager from Bovis Lend Lease, employed on the £120m first phase of a Bovis/Stanhope PFI scheme to redevelop HM Treasury in, Whitehall, central London. To mark the occasion, Graham was presented with a bottle of champagne by BIW chief executive Colin Smith.

Dozens of new users of BIW's supply chain management service are added every working day. On 1 December, the system was being used by 10,538 users from 1547 companies working on some 500 projects worth a total of £3.9bn. Clients include Sainsbury's, Capital One Bank, Manchester Airport, the Welsh Development Agency, the Wellcome Trust, Defence Estates and Asda.

As the technology is adopted by each client's supply chain, growth of the BIW Information Channel user base has accelerated rapidly, with 6206 users being added in the 12 months up to 30 September 2001, compared with 2018 added in the previous year. In the past two months alone, 1706 new users have been added.

BIW Technologies chief executive Colin Smith said: "One of our objectives is to become the de facto standard for project collaboration in the UK. Reaching this milestone shows we are achieving significant penetration, with literally thousands of people, including clients, architects, consultants, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers, using our system every day."

A qualified civil engineer with previous experience in many major London schemes with Wimpey, Tarmac and Balfour Beatty, Graham Stark, 49, said: "Bovis Lend Lease has used electronic systems to exchange information between project team members extensively. Having used our own Hummingbird system on the first phase of the complex redevelopment of the Treasury Building, we have now switched to BIW's service to help control documentation relating to second phase.

"I was surprised, but pleased, to learn that I was the 10,000th user."

BIW Information Channel makes project data available to every team member through unique, project-specific websites. Users can create, and have access to, information including drawings, text documents, photographs, comments, team member details and even virtual reality renditions, all viewed and sent securely over the internet. The system also supports decision-making after the construction phase, providing information for managers responsible for a building's operation and maintenance.

Editor's Notes

  • Project collaboration services from BIW Technologies (www.biwtech.com) were first employed in 1998 on UK construction projects for Sainsbury. BIW Information Channel is a sophisticated web-based supply chain integration technology, originally designed specifically for construction projects. Each client is provided with a unique, project-specific website created around a knowledge database. Using this, all data can be made available to every project team member - from the earliest concepts and specification, through detailed design, buildability studies, pre-fabrication, construction, maintenance, operation and improvement to the eventual demolition or dismantling of the facility.
