Argent selects BIW for King's Cross development

20 November 2007

Argent and landowners London & Continental Railways and DHL-Exel have chosen BIW Technologies (BIW) to provide its construction collaboration and process management software to support the development at King's Cross in central London.

King's Cross is one of the most significant development and regeneration opportunities in Europe, focused on 67 acres (27 hectares) of brownfield land between King's Cross and St Pancras International stations. It has outline planning permission for some eight million sq ft (740,000m2) of mixed use development.

The King's Cross masterplan has been prepared by Allies and Morrison and Porphyrios Associates, with landscaping by Townshend Landscape Architects.

Outline planning permission was granted in December 2006 and includes up to 4,900,000 sq ft (450,000m2) of premium office area, some 1,900 new homes and up to 495,000 sq ft (46,000m2) of retail, plus hotels, serviced apartments, student accommodation, leisure, health, cultural, community, education and other uses. Proposed infrastructure works include 20 new streets, ten new public spaces, three new bridges and enhancements to the Regent's Canal. Also included are the refurbishment of some 20 historic buildings and structures.

Tony Giddings, Construction Director at Argent said:
"With a project the size of King's Cross we need the best team on board.  BIW's web-based system means we will have a consistent approach to the management of information and business right from the start, and one that is readily accessible to all the companies involved in this exciting regeneration opportunity."

BIW chief executive Colin Smith adds: "We are delighted that our system has been chosen for the development at King's Cross. It confirms BIW as the platform of choice for developers wanting to keep firm control of complex, multi-project programmes of work."

King's Cross

The development at King's Cross (www.argentkingscross.com) is one of the most significant development and regeneration opportunities in London.

Planning permission was granted in December 2006 for a high density development of nearly 8 million sq ft.  The permission includes nearly 2,000 new homes, 20 new streets, 10 new major public spaces and the restoration of 20 historic buildings and structures which are to be retained and refurbished.

The site also includes two major rail termini – St Pancras International (opened on 14 November 2007) and King's Cross Main Line stations next door - providing the best public transport accessibility in London with 10 different rail and London Underground lines.

It is being developed as a joint venture between three companies:

  • Argent (King’s Cross) Limited (Argent - www.argentgroup.plc.uk) is one of the UK's best respected property development companies and is the selected developer for the site.
  • London & Continental Railways Limited (LCR), selected by the Government to build and operate High Speed 1, is one of the landowners at King's Cross.
  • DHL – Exel Supply Chain (DHL-Exel) is a world-class provider of supply chain solutions and the other landowner at King's Cross.

BIW

  • Software-as-a-service project control and collaboration solutions from BIW Technologies (www.biwtech.com) were first employed in 1999 on UK construction projects for Sainsbury's. BIW believes it is the European leader in web-based collaboration systems for the construction and property industry, measured by numbers of users, with over 92,000 users.
  • The BIW platform is a sophisticated web-based supply chain integration system, designed specifically for construction projects or programmes. Each client is provided with a unique, project or programme-specific environment created around a knowledge database. With this, information can be made available securely to every team member – from the earliest concepts, through detailed design, buildability studies, pre-fabrication, construction, maintenance, operation and improvement to the eventual demolition or dismantling of the facility.
  • BIW customers include Cambridge University, Sainsbury's, House of Fraser, Crest Nicholson and Marks & Spencer, the Coal Authority, Hertfordshire County Council, Mace, Bovis Lend Lease, Interserve, Gleeds and Fitzpatrick, and developers Land Securities, Ballymore, Dandara and British Land.
