NAKHEEL SELECTS BIW TO HELP DELIVER OVER 1 KILOMETRE HIGH TOWER

SaaS specialist selected by iconic developer for Nakheel Tower

27 October 2008

Nakheel, Dubai’s leading property developer, has selected BIW Technologies (BIW) to deliver Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications to support design and construction of Nakheel Tower, part of the Nakheel Harbour & Tower development. The Nakheel Tower, which will be over a kilometre high, is at the heart of a 10-year development in the Jebel Ali area of Dubai. BIW, who announced a corporate deal with Nakheel in March 2008, has been working with the Nakheel Harbour & Tower project team since early 2007.

The Nakheel Tower will have more than 200 floors and approximately 150 lifts. It will be the centrepiece of a major 270 hectare development, Nakheel Harbour & Tower, providing homes and offices for more than 55,000 people, including another 40 towers ranging in height from 20 to 90 floors. Heavily inspired by Islamic design and geometry, the development also proposes over 3,500 hotel rooms and over 950,000 m2 of commercial and retail space, the world’s only inner city harbour, and large expanses of green spaces, including canal walks, parks and landscaping.

The project team includes architect Woods Bagot, building services engineer Norman Disney & Young and structural engineer WSP. More than 200 individuals – in locations including Australia, the USA, Japan and the UK, as well as the United Arab Emirates - have so far been registered as BIW users. This figure will increase significantly once work on the Tower itself starts.

Chris O’Donnell, Nakheel’s Chief Executive Officer, says:

“Working on such huge, complex and demanding developments requires efficient collaboration among multiple teams and multiple organizations. We selected the BIW system for its ability to manage complex collaboration and reporting requirements at Nakheel and with our project teams.”

BIW General Manager, Middle East, Dr Asif Sharif says:

“BIW won this project – which predated our corporate deal - against stiff competition from other vendors by virtue of its team’s experience, the proven track record of its technology in managing mega-projects, and the scalability of its application and SaaS infrastructure. For valued customers like Nakheel, we also have a UAE-based hosting facility and a 24/7 dedicated global helpdesk to help ensure high levels of service. We are delighted to have such a prestigious project in our portfolio.”

About Nakheel Harbour & Tower

  • Nakheel Harbour & Tower will be Dubai’s capital – there is nothing like it in Dubai.  At the core of the Nakheel Harbour & Tower development is a tower more than a kilometre high and the world’s only inner city harbour. Nakheel has focused on creating a true community – a location for working, relaxing and entertaining and for art and culture.
  • In line with its role in shaping the city’s future and creating some of the world’s most iconic developments, Nakheel has taken its inspiration from Islamic design and geometry.
  • Nakheel is inspired by the Islamic principles: inclusion, innovation, diversity, excellence, growth and progress to create not just the building and design of Nakheel Harbour & Tower, but also its community.
  • It is a precinct that minimises car use and maximises train, bus and water transportation. A complete transportation hub blends into the harbour area with metro transportation combined with a unique water transport interchange, with Abra & Dhow station links.
  • The development includes canal walks, parks and gardens, and landscaping which will also contribute to wellbeing and increased outdoor activity for those communities.  It will have the largest public promenade in Dubai.
  • Nakheel Harbour & Tower is a sustainable, compact precinct offering an alternative lifestyle built on walkability, choice of transport, variety of public and open spaces including sky gardens, and “living” bridges.
