BIW INFORMATION CHANNEL FOR MAJOR BIRMINGHAM REGENERATION SCHEME 02 August 2002 Crest Nicholson is using the BIW Information Channel project extranet on its £200 million Park Central transformation scheme in Birmingham. The ten year project in the city centre will create 1,400 homes and in excess of 280,000 sq ft of commercial space including offices, hotels, retail and food and leisure outlets together with eight acres of parkland. Crest Nicholson has long experience of working with BIW and was the first housebuilder to appreciate the benefits of the BIW Information Channel collaborative project extranet. This web-based central information hub of drawings, documents and correspondence can be accessed by all authorised members of a construction project team via a PC or Mac to provide accurate up-to-date information – no new software or hardware is needed. BIW is now the largest provider of construction extranets in Europe with 16,000 users in 2,000 companies working on over 800 projects. Stephen Boid, Central Park project director for Crest Nicholson said: “”We are greatly benefiting from the experience of this Information Channel on other Crest major projects and have taken this forward to include Park Central. The rapid and controlled sharing of information at all levels will provide an efficient working programme, providing up to the minute project information and ensure best use of cost and time.” BIW chief executive Colin Smith commented: “Crest Nicholson’s decision to adopt the Information Channel on this major regeneration scheme confirms our position as the leading provider of collaboration technology. The huge number of drawings and other documents involved in a project of this complexity can be managed effectively by all the teams during construction and archived for future reference.” Editor’s notes: - Crest Nicholson - The Park Central transformation scheme is the result of an innovative relationship between Crest Nicholson plc and joint landowners Optima Community Association and Birmingham City Council. It will take 10 years to complete and provide 1,400 new homes, an eight acre park and up to 280,000 sq ft of commercial space.
- BIW is the largest provider of construction extranets in Europe. In addition to Crest Nicholson, the customer list includes Sainsbury’s, Capital One Bank, Marks & Spencer, Manchester Airport, the Ministry of Defence, Ikea, the Welsh Development Agency, Asda, the Wellcome Trust, Kajima and developer Garbe.
- BIW Information Channel is sophisticated web-based supply chain integration technology designed specifically for construction projects. Each client has a unique, secure, project-specific website created around a knowledge database. All data - from concept and specification, through detailed design, buildability studies, pre-fabrication, construction, maintenance, operation and improvement – is available to every authorised project team member. Up-to-date knowledge throughout the client, professional team, contractor, sub-contractor and materials supplier chain brings major economies in time and money. There are also tangible savings in reducing printing, duplicating and couriering costs and the potential risks of traditional delivery routes for drawings and documents. All material is archived giving complete traceability and the legislatively required health and safety record.
