BIW WINS SPANISH XANADU PROJECT

16 August 2002

The £160 million (250m Euro), 235 acre shopping and leisure complex, ‘Madrid Xanadu’, under construction by US developer Mills Corporation in Madrid, is being managed using BIW Information Channel, the collaborative working extranet from BIW Technologies.

Undertaken by a partnership of Mills and Parcelatoria Gonzalo Chacon in conjunction with architects Chapman Taylor, Communication Arts and Kiko Abata, brokers Healey & Baker, construction manager Mace and general contractor Ferrovial, the Madrid Xanadu is billed as the most imaginative shopping and leisure destination in Europe, set to attract 25-30 million visitors a year.

Retail tenants include Spain’s premier department store, El Corte Ingles, and 200 speciality retailers. Leisure facilities encompass cinemas, health and fitness centres, a skate park, bowling, night clubs and restaurants. Centrepiece of the complex is an indoor 'snow dome' with theme-park scale alpine attractions such as snowboarding, skiing and sledding. Construction began in September 2001 and the complex is set to open in spring 2003.

The international team of consultants, contractors and specialist suppliers share and exchange all project-related information – including drawings, documents, photographs, comments, requests for information, instructions and team member details - via BIW Information Channel.

"On a truly international project of this scale, with an American client, UK consultants, and a host of integral consultants in Spain and other European countries, it was vital that we had a quick and efficient way of managing information," said Brad Kempf, finance director of Mills Global. "One great saving has been a reduction in the number of on-site meetings – many issues can be resolved remotely using the Channel."

Editor’s notes:

  • Project collaboration services from BIW Technologies (www.biwtech.com) were first employed in 1998 on UK construction projects for Sainsbury. BIW is now the European leader in web-based collaboration systems for the construction industry, with over 15,000 users in more than 2,000 companies working on nearly 800 projects worth over £7 billion. The customer list now includes Capital One Bank, housebuilders Crest Nicholson and the Peabody Trust, Marks & Spencer, Manchester Airport, the Ministry of Defence, Ikea, the Welsh Development Agency, Asda, the Wellcome Trust, Kajima and developer Garbe.
  • BIW Information Channel is a sophisticated web-based supply chain integration technology, designed specifically for construction projects. Each client is provided with a unique, project-specific website created around a knowledge database. Using this, all data can be made available to every project team member – from the earliest concepts and specification, through detailed design, buildability studies, pre-fabrication, construction, maintenance, operation and improvement to the eventual demolition or dismantling of the facility.
  • The Mills Corporation (www.millscorp.com) is a self-managed real estate investment trust (REIT) based in Arlington, Virginia, USA, that owns, develops, leases, manages and markets a portfolio of market dominant retail and entertainment destinations (12 Mills and one Block) totalling approximately 18 million square feet in 11 US states.
