NEW BIW TECHNICAL INFRASTRUCTURE BROUGHT ONLINE

25 January 2010

UK-based Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) technology provider BIW Technologies (BIW) has implemented a new, faster, more scalable technical infrastructure to support its expanding European customer base. The company can now deliver greatly increased processing power and storage capacity to client's capital project teams, and its more flexible technical platform will support a range of new products scheduled for release during 2010.

BIW's project control platform supplies construction, infrastructure and property clients and their partners with an online backbone to help manage their projects and achieve their project governance obligations. The system is managed 24 hours a day and is accessible from anywhere in the world by authorised users.

BIW chief executive Colin Smith says:

"As the UK's leading SaaS technology vendor, Clients trust BIW to manage their data in a highly secure manner. Because BIW is a business application operating at the front line of projects, users also expect high levels of performance from the system. Therefore, BIW has made a significant additional investment in its infrastructure, underpinning the next step in the growth of the organisation."

The project involved the migration of over seven million terabytes of data (the equivalent of over 13 million documents). In total, over 650 client databases were transferred to the new BIW infrastructure – a process that was accomplished with minimal pre-arranged downtime over just six weekends.

At the end of December 2009, BIW was being used on a regular basis by over 189,000 users, drawn from 13,000 separate companies from all over the world.

Smith continues:

"The new infrastructure has been implemented in conjunction with Attenda, the UK’s leading managed hosting provider. Over the past eight years BIW and Attenda have developed a very close working relationship. Through this partnership clients and users are provided with the highest levels of availability, security and resiliency. In addition, the whole infrastructure and its supporting operational capabilities are accredited to three important international standards – ISOs 9001, 20000 and 27001 which are crucial components in underpinning the most trusted applications – our reputation is built on users always being able to access their project data at any time of the day, from anywhere in the world."

Notes to Editors

BIW Technologies:

  • Project collaboration services from BIW Technologies were first employed in 1999 on UK construction projects for major retailer Sainsbury's. BIW believes it is the European leader in Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) collaboration systems for the construction and property industry, measured by numbers of users, usage and volume of data.
  • The BIW platform is a sophisticated SaaS-based supply chain integration technology, designed specifically for construction projects or programmes. Each client is provided with a unique, project or programme-specific website created around a knowledge database. With this, data can be made available securely to every team member – from the earliest concepts, through detailed design, buildability studies, pre-fabrication, construction, maintenance, operation and improvement to the eventual demolition or dismantling of the facility.
  • BIW customers include leading UK companies such as Bovis Lend Lease, Sainsbury's, Mace, Crest Nicholson, Canary Wharf, The Resort Group, The Wellcome Trust and the Coal Authority. In North America, its projects include the new Seattle headquarters for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
