The energy-sapping challenge, which raises money for charity CARE International, has become an annual feature in the UK construction industry calendar. It requires each team to scale the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within a 24-hour period. After tackling Ben Nevis, the team will drive to Scafell Pike in the Lake District and then down to North Wales to tackle Mount Snowdon.
The BIW team, which includes chief executive Colin Smith and finance director Bill Flind, have already received pledges of over £1500, and – as one might expect of a business specialising in web-based technologies – most of these have come from a dedicated web-page at www.justgiving.com/BIW.
“As well as seeking pledges of financial support, we have also been busy training to ensure we successfully complete the challenge,” says Smith. “The BIW team leader is our financial accountant Bruce Wilkinson; he has already organised some gruelling training walks in the Surrey Hills, and just before Easter he led us on a climb of four peaks in Snowdonia. The next activity is a mountain awareness course in the Lake District, followed by an ascent of Scafell Pike. Another team member, Brandon Parkes, is using his preparation for the London Marathon as training.
“Several BIW customers and partner organisations are also participating in the event, but many others are also getting involved through sponsorship. Gleeds Collaboration Services, for example, has already pledged us some money – and if all the aches, pains and blisters are to be worthwhile, we want more to do the same.”

- The COINS 3 Peaks Challenge (www.coins3peakschallenge.com) is a classic mountain challenge exclusively for the construction industry. A team of walkers, plus two drivers, have 24 hours in which to climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales, respectively, and raise money for CARE International. The event starts on Saturday 12 May 2007 at Ben Nevis in the Scottish Highlands, moving to Scafell Pike in the Lake District, and ends at the foot of Snowdon in North Wales. It is an exceptional teambuilding event, combining teamwork, networking, beautiful scenery and a physical challenge.
